On Saturday 16th May, three members of Newport & District RC set out to run the inaugural Shropshire Historic 50k. Starting in Telford Town Park at the Coalbrookdale Coal Monument, runners headed out along the Silkin Way, past Blists Hill museum and through Jackfield to cross the Iron Bridge. They then continued on to Buildwas Abbey, before a loop around Much Wenlock to see the home of the modern Olympics and Wenlock Priory. The route then took the runners past Wroxeter Roman City, before passing Attingham Park on their way into Shrewsbury.

Participants ran along the river to join the town walls, before crossing the finish line next to the statue of Hercules in Shrewsbury Quarry. Running on a mix of roads and trails, the rain mostly held off, giving runners good conditions for the event. Kevin Nicklin was the first runner home for Newport, crossing the line in 6 hours, 33 minutes, 59 seconds. Edward Roper and Ellen Deighton ran the race together, and finished in 8:44:51.
