Last weekend, a number of Newport & District Running Club’s members made the trip up to Scotland’s capital city to take part in the Edinburgh Marathon Festival, an annual event that includes races at various distances over the course of a weekend.
Helen Edwards took part in the full marathon distance race, returning to the scene of what was a DNF for her last time out. The Marathon course starts up near Holyrood park, before heading down the Royal Mile, taking in the city centre, before an out-and back section along the coast to complete the full 26.2 miles. Helen was delighted to make it to the finish this time, stopping the clock at 4 hours and 18 minutes.
Newport were represented in the half marathon by Bernie Holbrook and Ralph Humphries. The half marathon route follows some of the marathon route, but cuts out a section of the coastal run that the full distance marathon takes in. Bernie managed to beat the 2-hour mark with his time of 1:59:28 in 4,576th position, whilst Ralph managed a time of 2:05:34 in 5,600th place.
Liz Mountford was the sole Novaportan representative in the 10k, describing it as “The hilliest 10k I have ever done!”. The 10k race takes place in Holyrood park, and features fantastic views of the city and Edinburgh castle on a one lap course. Liz ran a time of 1:19:45, which secured her 1,858th position.
