Last weekend, three Newport & District Running Club members made the journey north to Manchester to take on the 26.2 miles that make up the Manchester Marathon. Normally taking place in April, this is another event finding a temporary home elsewhere on the calendar, and the Novaportan representatives were amongst almost 13,500 runners taking on the challenge.
Starting and finishing the Salford, near the Old Trafford cricket and football grounds, the mildly undulating route winds its way around a number of suburbs and towns, including Stretford, Altrincham, Sale, Timperley and Manchester city centre.
Sheryl Stuart was the first Newport runner to finish, setting herself a new PB of 3 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds and finishing in 4,700th position overall. Sheryl was delighted with her new PB, and said afterwards “What a day! Managed to get a new “official ” pb of 3hrs 56mins; Manchester is so lovely and well supported!” Not too far behind Sheryl was Amanda Sharp, who completed the course in 4:04:57 and took 5,692nd spot. Jo Lutner ran the course in her trademark “fairy” outfit, and came away with a time of 4:29:38, which secured 8,213rd place.
