Chas Bickford-Smith, of Newport & District Running Club, recently took on the Nottingham Outlaw Half Ironman Triathlon. This punishing race is made up of a 1.2 mile swim, a 55.4 mile cycle, and finishes with a 13.1 mile run (a half marathon, in other words). The race took place at the national Water Sports Centre in Nottingham, where the swim took place in the regatta lake, whilst the cycle section took in various loops of local roads, and the run took in laps of the watersports centre.
Chas started at 6:15am, and completed his swim section in 40 minutes, 45 seconds, before spending 4:43 in the transition zone before starting the cycle. The bike ride took 2 hours, 52 minutes 28 seconds, before heading into the final section of the day. After a transition of 3:45, Chas set off on his half marathon, a tough ask after 3 and half hours of swimming and cycling. His run section, a 3-lap course around the watersports centre, was completed in 2 hours, 9 seconds, giving Chas 618th place overall, and a final overall finishing time of 5 hours, 41 minutes, 40 seconds.
