Newport & District Running Club’s Kay Cutler-Rixom went to Alton Towers at the weekend – but it wasn’t to ride on the rollercoasters or to take a leisurely stroll around the gardens. Alton Towers hosted four races (5k, 10k, half and full marathons) through the grounds of the theme park over two days, and Kay entered the 10k race, which took place on Saturday.

The course for the 10k took in a lap of the park, the route winding its way around, under, through and past iconic rides and rollercoasters such as Nemesis, Oblivion, Galactica (formerly Air), The Smiler, Rita and Th13teen, and also the hilly sections that make up the pleasure gardens in the park.

Kay’s chip time was 1 hour, 13 minutes and 14 seconds, which was enough to secure 1,673rd place out of 2,043 runners who finished the race. She said after the race: “I’d forgotten when I registered quite how hilly Alton Towers was! It was great hearing ‘Come On Newport!’ after so long with no races!”
