On Saturday, uncle and nephew team David Evans and Alex Cochrane, of Newport & District Running Club, took on the 9-mile race at the “Ironbridge Railway Ultra (Winter edition)”. Consisting of five different options (9 miles, Half Marathon, 19 miles, 28 miles and 37 miles) for race distances, the event takes runners out and back along the side of the river Severn between Ironbridge and Bridgnorth, on the disused railway line, offering outstanding views of the river itself.

Each race took part at the same time (with the 37-mile ultra starting half an hour before everyone else), and each race used out-and-back sections which were repeated a number of times according to each race distance. There was a slight incline on the way out, with a pay back of a slight downhill on the return leg, and after recent rain, it was a little muddy underfoot.

Alex and David were both in contention at the front of the 9-mile race, and Alex ran a brilliant time of 1 hour, 2 minutes to take the overall win! He was about 9 minutes ahead of the second-placed runner, and the podium was rounded out by David, who took third overall with a time of 1 hour, 19 minutes!
