Last Sunday, 204 runners took on this year’s edition of the Tibberton Trot, a 10k multi-terrain run organised jointly between Newport & District Running Club and the local community in Tibberton. Taking place on the roads, fields and tracks surrounding the village of Tibberton itself, the race starts and finishes on the playing fields at Tibberton School, with stalls around the start/finish area contributing to a “village fete” feel to the day, with is added to by the bacon baps and hot drinks on sale at the community village centre. A 1km fun run for junior runners under 14 yars took place about an hour before the main race began, with 71 participants.

The route is anti-clockwise, with an initial lap of the school playing fields, which is followed by a lap of the village, which turns into a tour of the surrounding countryside, taking in Green Lane, Bolas Heath and skirting around Cherrington, before returning to the village and finishing back on the school fields. Around 50m of climbing is featured, with very varied terrain around the course. Luckily, the rain just about held off this year, despite the forecast indicating a soggy occasion! Prior to the fun run and 10K race, all participants were put through a warm up by Nicky from Studio Barre

The overall winner was Rob Weston, who stopped the clock at 35 minutes, 9 seconds. He was followed by Gabe Morris of Shrewsbury AC, who completed the course in exactly 36 minutes, and Rhys Hall completed the podium in a time of 37:09. Sarah Mackness (City of Stoke AC) was 9th overall, and first female, with her time of 41:54. She was followed by Lian Dye, who was 17th overall in a time of 44:46, and Molly Bithell completed the ladies’ podium with her time of 46:52, in 24th overall.

Winner of the F40 category was Steph Jones, F50 was Kim Fawke of Lawley RC, F60 was won by Pamela hardy of Shawbury Joggers, and Jane Moore was victorious in the F70 category. The M40 winner was Adam Speller, Gaz Postins won the M50 category, and Brian Roberts won in the M60 category. There were no entries in the M70 category. Husband and wife team Chris and Emma Clulow took the prizes for fastest male and female Tibberton residents, sharing the Owen Meredith shield.

Host club Newport & District RC were well-represented, with 15 runners taking part. 16-year-old Harry Wilmot was the first back in green and purple, with a time of 41:29, which was good enough for 8th place overall. He was followed by David Thomas, who was 26th overall in 47:28, whilst Helen Mason was NDRC’s first female finisher, in 55th place and 53:43. Phil Hardy ran with Helen, finishing just 1 place back and with the same time, while Paul Atkinson was 60th in 54:13. Dale Fordham was close behind, taking 61st place in a time of 54:16, and Ralph Humphries was 87th with his time of 57:48.

Simon Yap took 106th position with a time of 1:00:25, followed by Matthew Humphries, who ran a time of 1:01:52 for 116th place. Jenny Reeves clocked 1:05:45 to finish 152nd, followed by Emma Bishton, who was 172nd in 1:10:04. Louise Patterson did the race as part of a longer 10.5 mile run as part of her marathon training, and stopped the clock at 1:11:15 in 181st place. Ellen Mills finished 197th with her time of 1:16:01, whilst Jo Lutner dressed up as a Flamingo* rider for her run, finishing 201st with her time of 1:21:11. Rachael Hughes crossed the line in 1:27:05 to finish 202nd overall. Bringing up the tail of the race, volunteering as sweepers, were Anne Strowger, Helen Holdroyd and Kay Wilkinson-Smith.
*The flamingo, for reference, is called Florence.

Organiser Martin Murdoch said after the race: The weather forecast in the days leading up to the event was for heavy rain, but very fortunately, it kept its distance and only started just as we had finished clearing the field after the race. The feedback from runners has been that it was an excellent race; organization and support of marshals on course was excellent.
The event is supported brilliantly by NDRC and the Tibberton Community, whether it be running or volunteering; this year there were 75 volunteers who assisted with the event, so a big thank you to a great team.
We are very fortunate to also have sponsors which offsets the cost of the event to runners, Aviramp and Logalog being main races sponsors, also we have a very generous offer by Sutherland Arms pub who donate a drinks voucher for all runners and volunteers and age category prizes sponsored by local companies. The 2026 event will take place on Sunday September 13th.
