On Sunday, three members of Newport & District RC made the trip up the A41 to take part in the Chester Half Marathon. Starting at Chester Racecourse, and finishing on Northgate Street in the city centre, the route takes runners out of the city towards the north-west, doing loops around the villages of Mollington and Saughall before returning to the city centre by the same route they left.

David Thomas and Helen Mason

Running in hot conditions, nearly 6,000 people took part this year, and David Evans was first back for NDRC, completing the course in a time of 1 hour 46 minutes, 45 seconds to take 1,314th place overall. David Thomas, running in his first half marathon, ran a time of 2:00:06 in 2,770th position, whilst Helen Mason completed the trio, taking 2,963rd place with her time of 2:02:09.

Helen said afterwards: “I completed the Chester Half Marathon this weekend, for the second year in a row. We made a weekend of it as a family, and stayed in Chester on Saturday night, making the most of seeing the city in the spring sunshine and fitting it a visit to the Ice Cream Farm on Saturday.

The race itself was exceptionally well organised and supported and I ran with David Thomas who was doing his first half marathon. We paced ourselves well for 11 miles, with me holding back a bit as I was worried about the heat and I knew about the hill at mile 12-13! David increased the pace for the last two miles to achieve his goal of 2 hours and I came in at 2.02 which was 6 minutes off last year’s time.

My 6 year old son completed the fun run with his friend and they are proudly showing off their medals in school this week!”
