Sunday was a busy day on the local racing scene. As well as the Market Drayton 10k, and the Uttoxeter Festival of Running, three members of Newport & District Running Club made the short journey to Shifnal to take part in this year’s Shifnal 10k. Starting and finishing in the town centre, the route takes runners on an anti-clockwise route, firstly along the main road towards Madeley, before moving onto the back roads and looping back towards the town via the villages of Kemberton and Evelith. Around 80 metres of climbing is featured, mostly in the second half of the race.

In a field of over 400 participants, Alex Millington was the first member of NDRC to cross the line, and did so in second place overall, stopping the clock at 36 minutes, 50 seconds, around a minute and 20 seconds behind the overall winner, Nick Castle. Ashley Moore finished in 23rd place with a time of 41:10, and Carrie Stokes completed the trio with a time of 52:33 in 146th position.

Ashley said afterwards: “As was Market Drayton, it was an extremely warm race, and the course was challenging with a lot of climbing between 5k and 8k, so hill work would have been beneficial. I was on for a sub-40 minute time, until my legs gave up at the 5-mile point. The climb and the heat got to me in the end, with hardly any shaded areas on course. There was great support along the lanes and from the marshals. It was a good local race, and I would recommend it to all. There were some very competitive runners there, and also people just out to enjoy the day, so a great mix.”
