On Sunday, five Newport & District runners (plus one supporter: Toni Ireland on tambourine!) did the Cambridge half marathon. The race is run on a flat course going through the university grounds and wider city with a lot of scenery to be enjoyed by the runners. The community also comes out in force, with support from bands, choirs, drummers and so forth. There were over 16,000 runners, so entrants had different start times and gates.

Kay Wilkinson-Smith went off first of the NDRC participants, and finished with a time of 1 hour 52 minutes, 35 seconds to take 4,561st position overall. Kay was followed by Helen Holdroyd, whose time of 2:10:29 put her in 8,341st position. John Metzger was next, running a time of 2:11:52 in 8,572nd place, exactly the same time as Ralph Humphries, who was just one place back. Sarah Higginson finished 11,414th in a time of 2:31:55.

Ralph said afterwards: “It’s a lovely flat course going through the university grounds & city with all the beautiful scenery. Incredible support with bands, choirs, drummers etc. I was very pleased with my time, as I went in the 02.15/02.30 starting gate. There was just one downside; some of the water stations ran out of water for the later runners.”
