Last weekend, Newport & District Running Club’s Jennie and Darren Waters took on an ultramarathon, the Brenig Way 50k. Afterwards, Jennie was kind enough to send us this post-race report:

The Brenig Way 50K follows the route of an old drovers route. It starts in the Dee Valley and follows a little-used route though natural woodlands, pasture land, along riversides and past a number of ancient cairns, before reaching Llyn Brenig and the site of a Bronze Age burial ground. With 4700ft of ascent, there were plenty of opportunities to see stunning views of both the Clwydian range and Snowdonia.

As the route was advertised as following less frequently travelled paths, we expected longer grass, nettles and brambles in parts so were prepared for that, but we hadn’t anticipated that the forest sections would be an obstacle course. Luckily, the day was about running somewhere we hadn’t been before, enjoying the trails and not worrying about position or how long it took.

We ran together and finished in 17th & 18th out of 30 entrants in a time of 7 hours and 56 minutes.
