On July 31st 2014, Duncan Strowger passed away suddenly, and unexpectedly, from a brain haemorrhage. He was just 33 years old. A member of both Newport & District Running Club and Stone Master Marathoners, Duncan was a popular and well-known person in the local running scene, taking part in local races regularly, as well as social and training runs with both clubs.

Every year, members of both clubs come together to remember Duncan, and celebrate his life, in a joint memorial run, which alternates between being hosted by either club. Even back in 2020, at the height of the Covid-19 Lockdown, members of both clubs shot socially-distanced videos, which served as an alternative to being able to come together as a physical gathering (this can be found here).

Members of NDRC and Stone MM, as well as members of Duncan’s family, come together for the Memorial Run

This year was Newport’s turn to host, and members from both clubs turned out in big numbers to remember Duncan. They met at the Swan, Forton, and took part in various distance routes, sharing stories and memories, and enjoying the evening sun. Afterwards, everyone sat down for a buffet and drinks to continue the tributes into the evening.

Some club members who were away, and unable to take part in person on the day, did their own memorials, including the Stokes family, who sent us photos from their tribute run and toast on Anglesey.

Members of the Stokes family, unable to attend in person, raise a glass to Duncan from Anglesey.

Duncan’s mother Anne, a passionate runner herself, and a very active member of Newport & District RC, sent this message on behalf of Duncan’s family, in thanks of everyone who took part and paid tribute to Duncan’s memory:

“John and I would like to thank everyone who came to Duncan’s celebration of life and love of running last Wednesday. It is eight years since he suddenly died and it is so pleasing to our family that he is so fondly remembered. Thanks also to those who were unable to attend but sent supportive messages on the day. From: Anne, John, Michaela, Tom, Beatrice and Harriet”

Anne also said that, having sent messages to both clubs to thank everyone for their support, she received a lot of messages back, mainly about runners being supportive of each other and enjoying the camaraderie of running. Stone MM have already started their plans to host next year’s event, which will no doubt be another great celebration of Duncan’s life and another chance for friendships to be made and continued between both clubs.
